Balboa/Anthony C. Beilenson Park: The Finest Lake

The Department of Recreation and Parks manages a vast expanse of over 16,000 acres of parks, offering a wide range of recreational, social, and cultural programs. With 559 parks spread across all neighborhoods of Los Angeles, from the valley to the coast, they are dedicated to providing comprehensive social services. Their diverse and engaging recreational programs cater to the needs of youth, adults, and seniors.

Their responsibilities encompass the maintenance and operation of numerous sports fields, playgrounds, tennis courts, recreation centers, outdoor fitness areas, pools, aquatic centers, senior centers, skate parks, golf courses, museums, dog parks, and summer youth camps. They actively support the Summer Night Lights program, which aims to reduce gang activity and promote community intervention.

Additionally, they prioritize the preservation of urban wildlife and the city’s open spaces. They take care of the park’s urban trees, as well as maintain 13 lakes and 92 miles of hiking trails, contributing to the abundant natural resources of Los Angeles.

The department oversees the renowned Griffith Park, one of the largest urban parks in North America. It is home to significant historic sites and landmarks, including the world-famous Griffith Observatory, the iconic Greek Theater, and the legendary Hollywood sign. They also own and operate Venice Beach, the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, and 12 museums, attracting millions of visitors from around the globe.

Their main focus lies in restoring and enhancing the safety and enjoyment of park visitors. They strive to expand recreational programming, promote equal park access and equity, revitalize the Northridge River, implement sustainable practices, forge public-private partnerships, and improve customer service. These parks in Los Angeles, particularly in Northridge, contribute to making the city one of the most livable in America. As the General Manager, I take great pride and honor in working with our dedicated team of 1,363 full-time employees, 6,628 part-time/seasonal employees, 1,763 registered volunteers, and park partners to build healthy communities.
